In Vinterrand, a matriarchal society built to prevent male violence, love is considered the most dangerous rebellion.

Linora Sahl, a loyal officer for the system, is given the chance to uncover what happened to her exiled father. Determined to close the door to the grief of that lost connection, she interrogates Elian Norgren, a man accused of murder and facing execution. She soon finds out he knows nothing of her father, yet his sensitivity and magnetic presence draw her in, stirring feelings she has been taught are dangerous.

When he is found guilty, the return of the death sentence creates friction amongst the Hearthbound, an underground rebel force. A Lieutenant with a personal vendetta against Linora’s family advances Elian’s execution and Linora questions his guilt. She warns him so he has the chance to say farewell to his family, choosing feeling over duty for the first time. When he escapes, she is accused of betrayal.

Forced into hiding, Linora and Elian retreat to a remote cabin. As they are hunted down by the world she once believed in, life outside the system forces her to confront a terrifying possibility—that the measures put in place to protect women may have cost them all what makes life worth living: connection, freedom, love.

As his real identity comes to light and betrayal festers between them, Linora and Elian are propelled towards the very center of the Hearthbound movement. In a world hardened by grief and a past marked by bloodshed, Linora must choose between survival within a cruel society or fighting for a world that embraces connection, even if it might cost her him.
